Product design and UX research for an AI platform in automotive design. As a working-student Product Designer (remote), I own the research and final design end to end, working cross-functionally with engineering and program management across OEM partners.

Overview

Onyx Dynamics is building an AI platform for the automotive design space. I joined in December 2025 as a working-student Product Designer, responsible for UX research and design from discovery through to the final design.

The work centres on understanding how exterior designers, engineers, and program managers at major OEMs actually work, then shaping the product around those realities.

Research

Discovery interviews: Ran 8 in-depth interviews with exterior designers, engineers, and program managers from Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW and AVATR.

Cross-functional scope: Worked directly with engineering and program-management stakeholders across the OEM partners, grounding the research in how each role actually works.

Research enablement: Created a tutorial video to guide participants through the research survey, making the study easier to follow and complete.

Problem & product

The challenge: Automotive design and engineering teams work across different OEMs, each with their own tools, processes, and constraints. An AI product has to fit those real workflows rather than impose a generic one.

The approach: Lead with research, map how each role (design, engineering, program management) works, find where the friction is, and identify where AI genuinely helps, then translate that into a design the team can build.

Implementation

End-to-end ownership: From research synthesis through to the final design, I own the design decisions and the hand-off, collaborating closely with engineering to keep them buildable.

Ways of working: Cross-functional collaboration with engineering and program management, keeping design decisions tied to what the OEM partners actually need.

Impact

This is a current, ongoing role (since December 2025). Early outcomes:

  • A research foundation built directly on 8 practitioner interviews across four OEMs.
  • Design direction owned end to end and aligned with engineering and program management.
  • A reusable research-onboarding flow (tutorial video) that made participation easier.

Learnings

  • Designing for expert users, OEM designers and engineers, means learning their craft first.
  • Small clarity improvements, like a tutorial video, measurably help research participation.
  • Owning design end to end in a lean team demands tight, continuous collaboration with engineering.
  • Automotive programs span many stakeholders; aligning them early prevents rework.
